SMS Audio are currently working on a new line of headphones which aim to track your heart rate without the need for a chest strap. They are designed with running in mind, they hook over your ears to sit in place, don’t require a separate power source (they say that they can “harvest” power through the standard sized headphone jack), they are water resistant so you don’t have to worry in the rain and apparently they also reduce the noise created by body movement when running. The devices will also sync up with running applications to enable you to use the data to analyse when you were working hard and when you should put in more effort.
For me this is a great idea, I hate putting chest straps on before exercise so this would be something I’d invest in. Although there’s no news on price right now, it’s likely to be fairly high as their non-heart rate monitoring version retail at about US $80.
They are likely to be available in the next couple of months. Oh – also 50-cent is on board somehow and they come in different colours – useful to know.
