There’s hardly a run that goes by without me thinking “I’m getting thirsty, I could murder a nice warm merlot right about now”. Thankfully the French have come up with the perfect solution in the form of the Marathon Du Medoc… and they have created some kind of beautiful monster.
Surely the most decadent marathon on the planet, the Marathon Du Medoc winds its way through vineyards of the Medoc area of Bordeaux with competitors stopping at around 30 Chateaux on route which open their gates to provide wine and foods such as cheese, escargot and even foie gras. Whilst it may be tempting to stay drinking all afternoon and into the night, 6h30m is the cut off time to earn a medal for your efforts.
This got me thinking – we Brits love our pub crawls and unusual running events, surely we do something at a national level to match such an event. A bit of research threw up the annual Wheelbarrow Race in Pewsey. This involves running two miles pushing a wheelbarrow and stopping at 10 pubs to down a pint of beer… Unfortunately I think we have lost to the French on this one.
Melton Mowbray Marathon anyone?
